Weimaraners are beautiful and powerful animals. Originally bred for hunting, they were used to help in the pursuit of large and aggressive animals. While they are an attractive and sturdy breed, they are not intended as a passive house pet. This breed has a tendency to personality disorders which can range from mild to excessive. While not every dog will show these disorders, those that do can be successfully controlled. Proper Weimaraner training can help result in a great pet.
This is a high energy dog that requires frequent exercise on a daily basis. They are easily excitable, and can easily knock people over if overexcited. They are not an appropriate breed for homes with small children. Weimaraners love to play, and will tirelessly chase a ball for hours. Keeping them active is imperative.
Weimaraners have a natural drive to catch and kill prey. They will relentlessly pursue and try to kill smaller animals such as squirrels. Due to this natural trait, it is recommended that they not be kept in households with smaller dogs or cats. Keep in mind that this is an expected trait in an animal bred for the hunt.
They are a protective breed as well, as part of their breeding was to protect homes and property. This trait can lead to an unfortunate aggression and attempts to dominate anyone they are not familiar with. This aggression can happen quite unexpectedly, but can be controlled with rigorous training.
Separation anxiety is common in the Weimaraner, and it cannot be left alone for any extended period of time. If they are, it can manifest in destructive behavior that can be very damaging to furniture, home and themselves. This is especially prevalent in puppy hood. Kenneling and leaving the dog alone in the yard can cause separation anxiety to worsen. People who work long hours, or are not willing to include a dog in their daily activities should definitely consider a less demanding breed of dog.
With proper and professionally guided training, these dogs can be socialized and trained very effectively. They are avid learners, picking up commands extremely quickly, and this training helps to solidify the relationship between dog and owner. The owner must constantly apply the training to retain dominance and stay in control of the animal.
If an owner is able to provide lots of exercise and training, this smart and beautiful breed can be a very loyal animal. Working with the dog to help keep personality traits under control will help with a successful lifelong bond.
