Tips for Jack Russell Training

June 28, 2009 · Posted in Dog Training · Comment
by Andyl Hannerl

The scruffy face and bright eyes of the Jack Russell terrier makes this a popular choice for a pet and why this pup is often the breed of choice for movies and television. However, the Jack Russell may be small, but his will is mighty, and a dog that is not well trained will probably run the household.

If you have decided that this breed is the right pet for you, it will be important to commit to plenty of Jack Russell training to ensure your dog accepts you as the head of the house.

As usual, training should begin the moment your puppy comes home from its breeder and this should continue when the dog learns to obey commands that are basic and learn how to treat his new family with respect. The tips that you will see here for Jack Russell training will ensure that your dog will give happiness to your family.

Consistent Rules

The Jack Russell terrier is a very intellectual animal but the only thing that you need to look out for is the attitude that goes along with their being smart. This can be a drawback in Jack Russell training. The terrier can sometimes go against their owners authority even after learning the house rules. And this is why you will need to stay consistent with your dog. Give him the proper punishment if he disobeys a rule at the same time give him praises when he obeys your orders.

While this breed may take a bit more time and patience to train sufficiently, most will eventually submit to the authority of their owners. The most important thing to remember is that the rules of the house must be consistent to keep your dog in line.

Instincts come naturally

This type of breed has the instincts to hunt. And there will be times that if they see your family cat they will be provoked to attack it. There will also be times that he will take off his yard if he smells something interesting. These are things that are not trainable and will need the owners precautionary measures to keep them in control. This would mean keeping your dog on a leash when walking them and making sure that they are very confined when at home or when they are left on the yard.

Since these dogs can be diggers, it is a good idea to check the perimeter of your yard from time to time to make sure your pup is not creating his own escape route. It is also not a good idea to have a Jack Russell in the same house as cats or small pets like gerbils, since there is no guarantee that your dog will not decide to “hunt” your other pets on occasion.

Although Jack Russell training may take more patience and time than training other breed of dogs, you will be sure to have great rewards after. These terriers are loaded with great personality, intellect and are super loyal to their owners and with proper training, they will surely delight and entertain your family for a long time.

Vital Training Guidelines For Dogs

June 27, 2009 · Posted in Dog Obedience Training · Comment
by Corey Andrews

Dogs can be tremendous companions and good domestic pets. We have called them “man’s best friend” forever because of that. But in order to be a excellent doggy resident and a trusty family pet you must train your dog well.

You must start training your puppy for obedience as soon as he arrives at your home. The training will be ongoing until he is about a year old and then while he may be considered “fully trained”, you will still need to work with him to keep his skills razor-sharp for the balance of his years. A well-trained dog is a joy to own and a joy to be around.

The number one directive of dog training is that you must be the “alpha dog”. Some people may not like that phrase but the reality is that dogs are pack animals and they expect to have a leader. You must be the leader and all of the human members of your family unit must outrank your dog in the pack order. Dogs will do everything for the leader of the pack so that must be you.

Your dog must never be permitted to show dominance. He needs to wait to eat until after you have finished eating. This is a subtle but very imperative thing when it comes to establishing domination. He must never be permitted to jump on you or other people either.

Never let your puppy do things that would not be suitable for an grown-up dog. This includes jumping and nipping at you and other people. You must be consistent when you train a dog because they cannot reason like a human. A dog will not realize that it is okay to jump on you in your play clothes but not when you are in a business suit. Consistency is vital in dog training.

A crate will make all of your training easier. Dogs truly want a restful and cozy home that is their own and they feel protected and secure in a crate. At the beginning your puppy may whine but you will need to just leave him there and he will adjust. A crate will make housetraining and obedience training both much easier.

It is vital for your dog’s protection that he knows how to sit and stay. You must be able to control your dog at particular times and he must be yielding with your orders in order to avoid troubles like running off and jumping all over the visitors that come to your house.

Walking on a leash and heeling are also part of the basic training that your dog needs. After that you can move on to fun things like fetching. Well-trained dogs are the most enjoyable to own and to be around so do not slack on your pet-owner responsibilities.

Ouch! Training a Puppy to Stop Biting

June 27, 2009 · Posted in Dog Training · Comment
by Andyl Hannerl

Taking home a new puppy is going to be an exciting new quest that will also bring a lot of responsibility in rearing the puppy and providing it with proper training. The moment the dog comes home, training should start immediately although this is the time when the owner is still enjoying the cute little pup. The owner must just keep in mind that everything he does will create an impact on the behavior of the puppy and will carry this on even when he is already an adult.

Same with the other dog training, puppy training should have the consistency all throughout so that behaviors that are acceptable for you will also be acceptable for other people that will be coming into your home. Make sure that you do not confuse your dogs with the behaviors that he can or cant have with you and other people. Whatever behavior is unacceptable to other people should be the same with you.

Biting

One issue that is common with puppies that should be stopped through training is their biting. Puppies, while exploring their world would usually use their mouths and will likely bite, however this can be negatively thought of by other people.

The puppy should never be hit or slapped when training it to stop biting since this can lead to the puppy thinking that the owner is playing with it, roughhousing like dogs will do with each other.

Another way to train a pup to stop biting is by not playing any aggressive games such as chasing, wrestling or tug of war. Even though some of these games can be fun for you and your dog, it will encourage an aggressive behavior which should not be acceptable especially when you have guests coming to your house.

One of the greatest ways of training a puppy not to bite is by letting out a sharp Ouch whenever the puppy tries to nibble or bite and then removing eye contact and turning away from the pup. This is the same technique that dogs use with each other ” letting the other dog know and be aware that what it did hurt and will not continue to play that way.

This is one method that uses negative reinforcement in training the puppy so that he would know that when he bites, it will not be given the attention that its asking for. When the puppy calms down and does not bite, this is the time that the owner should praise him and give him the attention so that the appropriate behavior is reinforced.

If the puppy bites down on the hand, the owner should place one finger inside the mouth under the puppy’s tongue and hold onto the bottom of the jaw with the thumb for about ten seconds. The pressure should only be firm enough that the puppy cannot get away for that amount of time. The puppy will not be able to bite down and it will provide the negative reinforcement that the behavior is not acceptable to use.
